We've been waiting for the "one laptop per child" sort of availability within the United States. While this hasn't fully come to realization, we're starting to see something plausibly useful for education.
I want to break this into three categories at this time:
In Contributing Devices we can access limited bits of information, contact family, friends, and others, and rate content. These sorts of devices can easily access weather, movies, music, and the like. You can learn on them, and maybe even watch some limited video.
In Cosuming Devices we can read, listen, and watch information. You can read books and magazines. The input is rather limited, so you can make more detailed contributions than with a Contributing Device, but you don't have the full power of a Creation Device. Tablets and smart Tvs are good examples of Consuming Devices.
In Creation Devices we can actually manufacture new content. There is the processing and precision here to make things happen. While Consuming Devices are powerful, the lack of a true keyboard and mouse make it difficult to rapidly develop software, literature, compose music, and develop artwork. Creation Devices cost significantly more than the other two devices.
As of the start of 2013, this is the expected prices for each category by the middle of the year.
