I first started teaching HTML around 1996. The numbered version of HTML at that time was 3.2. An efficient version of HTML came out a few years later, in two slightly different variations, HTML 4.01 and XHTML. XHTML was very efficient, but was sometimes difficult to code without memorization. The industry has since switched to HTML 5.
