Getting started with ads - Getting a Domain Name
"Free" hosts don't allow advertising and the "free" host will cancel your account if you try.
Not only that, advertisers will laugh at you if you don't have your own domain name.

When you sign up for an advertising network (which is almost always free) they will give you HTML code to place on your site.
Once you have the HTML code up, you don't have to do anything else. (Yes, with a successful web site you can make money while you sleep.)
Updating your site once in a while to add new content and promoting your web site to get more visitors will help you earn money a lot faster.

How can I make money with my web site?
Here are the four basic ways of making money through ads on the web:
The term cost in the list below, such as cost per click, is to the advertiser, the company paying you. So, when #2 says cost per click it means "costs the advertiser per click" and "pays you per click!" These are terms used in the advertising industry, I didn't create them, I'm just explaining them!
- Views (CPM) - CPM is when you get paid when a person visits your site and sees an advertisement. This was the first common way of getting paid to have a web site. Television and newspapers had no way to "click" an ad so there was no way to directly count the number of people actually interested in a product--that's why this was the initial way people got paid. CPM advertising is still used on really, really big web sites, but it's fairly rare on smaller ones. (cost per thousand)
- Clicks (CPC) - CPC is one of the most common ways to get paid for having ads on your web site. When a person clicks an ad, you get paid. The Google ads you see all across the Internet are typically CPC ads. Using CPC is a great way to get started in ads. (cost per click)
- Signups (CPA) - CPA is also fairly common. When a person signs up for something through a form or downloads something. you get paid. (cost per action)
- Sales ( % ) - Getting paid when something is sold through your special link is officially called commission. This is the favorite of the people selling the products--they only have to pay you if your advertisement literally sells them something that instant. This is a good extra to add but I recommend placing both CPC clicks and % commissioned ads on your web site. (percentage of sale)
You can combine all four types, or mix and match. That's completely acceptable and it's how most web sites pay their bills (and their owners).
And, of course, an obvious way to make money...
- Selling a Product or Service Online - This is the most time-consuming way of making money online. You deal directly with the customers and take all the profits (minus commission, if you're having people help promote your products.)
Reminder: You need your own domain name to make money!
I'm going to be completely honest, I didn't get my own domain name when I started, and moving to one took a lot more time than I had wanted. Save yourself the trouble and order the domain name right away. $5 a month. That's all it costs to get started.

Where can I make money with ads?
Here are a few companies that I use or have used in the past that have a pretty good record:
- Commission Junction - CJ.com offers programs from thousands of advertisers, that you can approve and select links from on an individual basis.
- Google Adsense - Great option for text-based ads. You get paid for authentic clicks.
- LinkShare is an e-commerce business solution for over 3.5 million online relationships. Become an affiliate of the Network for FREE and earn revenue by linking to over 500 premier online merchants. *New*
pure cash for selling t-shirts? mugs? mousepads? books?
I've come across a relatively new company recently that allows you to design and sell t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, and more through their site at no cost to you. You design the images, upload them and customize them until you're satisfied, and then place a link on your site to your personal "store" where they can be purchased online. You don't have to take the orders or ship the products personally, it is all done through this company. (They just send you checks for your sales!) You set the price above the cost, and the difference is pure profit! (E.g. say the mousepad base price is $10.99. If you sell it for $11.99, you'll make $1 per mousepad, at $12.99, you'll make $2 per mousepad, etc...)
