Hotbot is a great search engine for simple searches, because it uses directhit.com technology, which provides you with the most popular sites first. This means that when you search for say, Hawaii, the first sites to appear on your search result list will be those sites about Hawaii that people spend the most time at.

AltaVista is a speedy engine that usually allows new sites in within 48 hours. In addition to having all the normal engine features, it also lets you do cool things, like:
  • host: allows you to specify that pages must be (+) or not be (-) on a certain host.
    e.g. +host:microsoft.com windows
  • link: allows you to see pages within altavista's database that link to a certain page.
    e.g. -host:www.hostedhere.com +link:www.hostedhere.com/~mysite/
    ...if you had a site with the URL www.hostedhere.com/~mysite/ and wanted to see sites that link to it.
